International Women's Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group, or organization specific. The celebration at Virginia Tech includes this panel discussion facilitated by Maria Elisa Christie Ph.D., director of women and gender in international development at the Center for International Research, Education, and Development. The panelists are Farida Jalalzai Ph.D., associate dean for global initiatives and engagement, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and professor; Helena Carvalho Ph.D., associate professor and block director at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM); and Najla Mouchrek Ph.D., program director for interfaith leadership & holistic development. The International Women's Day celebration at Virginia Tech was co-sponsored by Cranwell International Center, Fralin Life Sciences Institute, the Graduate School, the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, and the Women's Center.
