Lecture Description: The talk covers examples of papers that needed correction, retraction, and – in some cases – no action after criticisms had been lodged. In each of these cases, more forthcoming communication from the journals, institutions, and authors lowered the reputational damage to science – and more obfuscation made it worse. A healthier ecosystem would be one where correction and retraction are destigmatized, where the parties answer questions rather than hiding behind statements, and where misconduct findings are separated from correction of the record.
