Alexandria and its surroundings provided training camps, hospitals, and even burial grounds for thousands of African American Union soldiers during the American Civil War. To help us commemorate Black History Month, Virginia Tech's Kurt Luther, associate professor of computer science, director of the Crowd Intelligence Lab, and project director of Civil War Photo Sleuth and City of Alexandria Council Member John T. Chapman, founder of Manumission Tour Company, dive deeper into this history with a lively discussion of local Black history in the Civil War era enhanced by the possibilities and perspective of crowdsourcing and artificial intelligence.
