This webinar is part of the Virginia Master Naturalist Continuing Education series.
Description: The Virginia Big Tree Program documents the largest trees found in Virginia and educates the public about the conservation and care of trees in rural and urban landscapes. Big trees are scored and ranked based on measurements of their height, crown spread, and trunk girth. There are currently over 1,500 living trees curated in the Virginia Big Tree Register and 54 national champion trees reside in Virginia. In this presentation, we will discuss the history and organization of the big tree program, measurement and scoring of big trees, and opportunities for Master Naturalists to get involved with documenting big trees and educating the public about their conservation and care.
Presenter: Eric Wiseman is coordinator of the Virginia Big Tree Program and associate professor of urban forestry in the Virginia Tech Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation. He has been on the Virginia Tech faculty since 2005 and served as the bigtree coordinator since 2013.
This webinar was presented on 20 July 2018.
