Virginia Tech mechanical engineers evaluate BiPAP upgrades

Using an artificial lung to mimic breathing, mechanical engineering graduate student Cody Dowd evaluates a new, affordable prototype system that could help hospitals experiencing ventilator shortages in Joseph Meadows’ laboratory. With a flow meter, alarm system, 3D printed parts, and exhaust filter modifications, this common sleep apnea device could be used to help COVID-19 patients breathe if ventilators are not available.
